Gary Robinson Claims Medal Play, Player of the Year
Rancho Santa Fe, CA–SD Amateur Golf held it’s last points-event of the season heading into the 2013 San Diego Cup Matches presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf on Saturday at the Farms Golf Club.
Gary Robinson of San Diego and John Rudolph of La Jolla were paired together in regulation. The two players wanted to play well, for different reasons. Rudolph was looking to climb up the Order of Merit and is hopeful to make the amateur team, while Robinson wanted to secure the 1st annual Pat Duncan Amateur Player of the Year award. Both played well and took big steps towards their respective goals. Robinson would lead throughout the day, but a late charge by Rudolph had the pair tied at 1-under par 71. The score would hold up, and the two had to go back on the course to settle things. Robinson, playing on his home course, would win with a par on the playoff hole, picking up 200 points and all but locking up the Player of the Year award. Rudolph, who would finish in 2nd place and pick up 150 points, moved up to the 12th position on the Order of Merit. John Kollus of San Diego would eagle the final hole to finish in a tie for 3rd, along with the ball-striking technician, Joe Ryon of Carlsbad.
